Background
A group of three elderly patients with chronic wounds exhibiting delayed healing and high levels of exudate were enrolled in study. A multidisciplinary team consisting of physicians, nurses, nutritionists, nursing attendants and physical therapists participated in treating the whole patient.

Methods
They received twice weekly dressing changes with an absorbent gelling calcium alginate dressing with antimicrobial silver covered with a gauze dressing. The cover dressing was inspected daily for strikethrough and changed as needed.

Results
In this series of cases exudate was managed effectively and exudate levels decreased. The periwound skin remained intact, and the patients all demonstrated improved healing.

Conclusion
A new gelling calcium alginate with antimicrobial silver with a seven day duration of antimicrobial activity demonstrated excellent wear time and exudate absorption without periwound maceration. The dressing was easily removed without disintegration. The individuals experienced improved healing and quality of life and returned to their highest level of functioning more quickly with quality wound care. Cost savings were realized with less frequent dressing changes and improved absorption when compared to another silver absorptive dressing.
